X (Twitter) Image Sizes Guide

Twitter rebranded to X, but most people still search for either name — this guide covers image sizing for the platform under both. X has specific requirements for different content types, and using the right dimensions avoids unwanted cropping or blur.

X/Twitter Post Image Size (2:1 Ratio)

The optimal size for a single-image post is 1200 × 600 pixels (2:1 aspect ratio), which displays at full width in the timeline. Posts with multiple images are cropped differently by X's layout algorithm — for consistent framing across a multi-image post, use the same aspect ratio for every image.

X/Twitter Header (Banner) Size

Headers should be 1500 × 500 pixels (3:1 aspect ratio). Keep in mind that your circular profile picture overlaps the bottom-left corner of the header on both desktop and mobile — avoid placing text or logos in that area, and keep important content centered or toward the right side of the banner.

Profile Picture Size

Profile pictures work best as square images (1:1) at 400 × 400 pixels minimum. They display as a circle on the platform, so keep your subject centered with margin around the edges.

Link Preview (Card) Image Size

When you share a link, X generates a preview card using the page's Open Graph image — the recommended size is 1200 × 628 pixels. This is separate from any image you attach directly to a post, and it's easy to overlook since it isn't visible until someone shares your link.

In-Stream Photo Size

When someone taps to expand a photo from the timeline, X displays it at up to 2048px on the long edge. Uploading at least 1200px wide keeps the expanded view sharp.

Common X/Twitter Image Mistakes

  • Placing header text or logos where the profile picture overlaps
  • Uploading a header or post image at low resolution, which X compresses further and blurs
  • Using mismatched aspect ratios across a multi-image post
